It provides official instructions for installing Ledger Live (the companion app), initializing your device, backing up your recovery phrase, and safely managing cryptocurrencies. Follow the steps below to ensure you set up your Ledger securely.

What’s in the box

  • Ledger hardware device (model may be Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, etc.)
  • USB cable
  • Recovery sheets / card
  • Quick start guide

Step-by-step setup

  1. Unbox and inspect: Verify packaging and contents. Do not use if the packaging appears tampered.
  2. Install Ledger Live: Download Ledger Live from the official site and install the desktop or mobile app.
  3. Open Ledger Live and choose "Get Started": Select your device model when prompted.
  4. Initialize your device: Choose Set up as new device or Restore from recovery if you already have a recovery phrase.
  5. Create a PIN: Set a secure PIN on the device. This protects against unauthorized physical access.
  6. Write down your recovery phrase: The device will display a 24-word recovery phrase. Write it on the provided card and store it offline. Never store this digitally.
  7. Verify recovery phrase: Confirm some words on the device when prompted to ensure accuracy.
  8. Install apps and add accounts: Use Ledger Live to install blockchain apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and create accounts for each asset.
  9. Make a test transaction: Send a small amount to confirm sending and receiving flow before transferring large balances.

Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the companion application for managing your Ledger device. It allows you to install blockchain apps, manage accounts, send & receive cryptocurrencies, and update firmware. For mobile usage, Ledger Live Mobile connects via Bluetooth with supported models (e.g., Ledger Nano X).

  • Download only from the official Ledger site.
  • Prefer the desktop app for first-time setup; mobile apps are convenient afterwards.
  • Firmware updates are managed through Ledger Live — always follow the official update prompts.

Security best practices

  • Never share your 24-word recovery phrase. Ledger support will never ask for it.
  • Store your recovery phrase offline in a secure location (consider multiple geographically separated backups).
  • Use a strong PIN and enable additional security features like passphrase where supported.
  • Only download Ledger Live from the official website and verify URLs manually to avoid phishing.
  • Verify transaction details on your Ledger device screen before approving.

Troubleshooting

  • Device not detected: Try a different USB cable/port, ensure Ledger Live is up to date, and avoid USB hubs.
  • Lost recovery phrase: If you still have access to the device, create a new wallet and transfer funds. If both are lost, funds cannot be recovered.
  • Firmware or update errors: Retry the update via Ledger Live; if it fails, consult official support.
  • Bluetooth issues (Nano X): Ensure Bluetooth is enabled and the device is in pairing mode.
